BASC gift gives young filmmakers a boost

BASC has donated camera equipment to a charity which provides filmmaking and multimedia training for young people in South Wales.

The gift included video and audio equipment no longer used by BASC’s media team, but still has an appreciable value as a great education tool.

The equipment will get a new lease of life with Cymru Creations, a not-for-profit company which specialises in media and history themed community activities. One of its flagship projects is the Blaenau Gwent Film Academy which teaches film skills to children and young people (pictured above). 

BASC deputy director of communications Garry Doolan said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into equipment that we no longer use. Cymru Creations is a remarkable charity that equips kids with skills to help them forge a career in this area. We are delighted to be helping the talented young filmmakers of the future.”

Cymru Creations director Kevin Phillips said: “We are very grateful for this donation, which will be crucial to the running of the film school. We pride ourselves on providing all classes at the Blaenau Gwent Film Academy at no charge. The classes are available to all children and young people from Tredegar and the surrounding areas. Now we will be able to engage with more young people than ever before.

“All the equipment will be used by the students, not just for teaching them film techniques, but in the actual production of films that themselves have underlying educational or social messages. Students are allowed freedom to create films about any topic they want. This results in a variety of fun, imaginative and sometimes serious short films. Many of these have been nominated at prestigious international film festivals.”
